Hi all!

Our monthly seminar is this Friday, 26 May from 1-3p.

It will again happen at the Hlanganani Junction in the UCT Library, with
the big fancy visualization screen.

This week, the Digital Libraries group will be presenting how they are
tackling information management problems in resource-constrained
environments as a means to democratise access to information.

**Abstract**
The Digital Libraries Laboratory conducts research and provides support for
information management problems, with particular emphasis on the poor
countries of the world, with their associated unique constraints, such as
culture/language differences, limited Internet bandwidth and limited access
to skilled staff. Our work is oriented towards the goal of making all forms
of information (heritage, research, education, etc.) more accessible to all
people.

Our current research can be broadly divided into the following (sometimes
overlapping) areas: Natural Language Processing; Information Retrieval;
Educational Technology; and Applications of ICT4D.

An overview of the various areas will be provided, followed by details of
current projects in each area.

**Future events**
For reference, future seminars are scheduled as follows (roughly 4th
Fridays, with adjustments):
Fri, 26 May: Digital Libraries
Fri, 23 June: Deployments
July: No seminar
Fri, 18 Aug: Net4D
Fri, 22 Sept: iComms
Fri, 27 Oct: TBD
Fri, 24 Nov: TBD

**Directions to the venue**
Enter the library through the main entrance, use the stairs on your left,
go up 3 flights into the 24/7 area, the venue is along the right back wall.
If you cannot locate it, front-desk security can assist you.
