Conversation with ICTDEVers: Preparing for an Aarhus workshop

Facilitators: Edwin Blake and Ineke Buskens

When: Thur, Jun 18 2015 @ 5-7pm

Where: University of the Western Cape, Computer Science staff room


On 18 August 2015, Edwin Blake, Andy Dearden and Ineke Buskens will
facilitate a workshop in Denmark as part of the Aarhus 5th decennial
conference.

These conferences have been held every ten years since 1975 and have a
tradition of setting new agendas for critically engaged thinking about
information technology.

Our workshop is about Researching for Change in an asymmetrical globalising
world. We contend that the asymmetries in our world are currently mirrored
in the aims, practice and outcomes of too much ICT4D research; in who can
participate and who can benefit. The ICTD research community’s widespread
dissatisfaction with this situation haunts ICTD gatherings.

In our workshop we want to explore critical alternatives to the current
practice, that are emancipatory, inclusive and oriented towards globally
sustainable futures.

We would like to set up a node of the Aarhus workshop in Cape Town on Aug
18 and we are looking for co-organizers of the local event and
participants.

Thus the purpose of this get-together, on 18 June, is to prepare for Aug
workshop.

Food will be provided as usual. Please BYOB (bring your own beverage).
