Please help us spread the word and forward in your networks!

*Lecturer in Computer Science – Distributed Computing and Systems*

Salary is in the range £40,645 to £48,088 per annum inclusive of
London Allowance

*Senior Lecturer / Reader in Computer Science – Distributed Computing and
Systems*
Salary is in the range £49,462 to £56,975 per annum inclusive of London
Allowance

The Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway carries out
outstanding research and delivers excellent teaching at both undergraduate
and postgraduate level: in 2014, we ranked 6th in the National Student
Survey with 96% overall student satisfaction, and we ranked 11th in the
Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) for the quality of our research
output with 32.2% of our publications classified as 4* (world leading) and
54.5% as 3* (internationally excellent).

Over the past three years, we have been implementing an ambitious plan of
expansion: nine new academic members of staff were appointed, new
undergraduate and integrated masters programmes were created, and three new
postgraduate-taught programmes were launched under the heading ‘Big Data’.
We are involved in multiple inter/multidisciplinary activities,
from information security to social sciences and digital media.

We are taking this plan one step further by recruiting new academic members
of staff who can strengthen our Distributed and Global Computing research
group, play a leading role in the new MSc in ‘The Internet of Things’ that
we will launch in 2016/17, and help us seize the opportunities that are
arising in terms of research funding and engagement with companies
and organisations in this area. The group’s research profile includes
joint projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge, IBM Research, NEC Labs
Europe, Google, and NASA, among others.

We are seeking to appoint at Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in
the USA) and Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Associate Professor in
the USA), although an appointment at Reader level will be considered for an
exceptional candidate. The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree or
equivalent, have a proven research record in distributed computing and
systems with a solid background in the underlying theory, and have a strong
interest in practice-driven research in a broad spectrum of applied
domains. Such domains include, but are not limited to, clouds, big data,
multicore, and modern networking systems.

The appointed candidate will be expected to make a contribution across the
full range of departmental activities, including undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching and the supervision of mainstream CS projects over a
wide range of topics. In particular, duties and responsibilities of this
post include: conducting individual or collaborative research projects;
producing high-quality outputs for publication in high-profile journals or
conference proceedings; delivering high-quality teaching to all levels of
students; supervising research postgraduate students. Ability to attract
funding, engage with industry, or contribute to our outreach activities
would also be very valuable skills.

These are full-time and permanent (tenured) posts, available from September
2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are based in Egham, Surrey, in
the ‘M4 corridor’, also called ‘England’s Silicon Valley’. In particular,
we are within easy commuting distance from London, Europe’s most dynamic
technology hub.
